Chairperson
Leads DCCG's governance with fairness and vision, and represents the group to the wider world.
Purpose of the role
To lead DCCG’s governance with integrity and vision, ensuring that decisions made today create conditions for long-term community empowerment, resilience, and trust. The Chairperson safeguards fairness, coherence, and alignment with DCCG’s Charter and Constitution, while representing the organisation externally with credibility. Fulfilling this role well builds DCCG’s capacity for sustainable leadership and enduring community trust.
Why this matters
Without strong and fair leadership, DCCG risks disorganisation, conflict, and loss of credibility. Done well, the Chairperson anchors governance in integrity and future vision, ensuring decisions made now strengthen the organisation’s resilience and create confidence for the next generation of leaders and community members.
What good looks like
- Poor outcome: Governance is inconsistent or biased; decisions are reactive. If this continues, DCCG risks conflict, loss of credibility, and weakened community trust.
- Expected outcome: Governance is fair, consistent, and aligned with the Constitution. When this level is sustained, DCCG remains trusted, compliant, and effective in serving its community.
- Excellent outcome: Governance is proactive, visionary, and unifying. When this is achieved, DCCG becomes a benchmark for community-led governance and leaves a legacy of sustainable empowerment.
The work of the role
Facilitating effective governance meetings
To ensure meetings are inclusive, orderly, and focused on decision-making aligned with DCCG’s mission. Without effective facilitation, meetings lose focus and decisions lack legitimacy; strong facilitation creates clarity and ensures continuity of sound governance.
- Poor: Meetings are unfocused or dominated by individuals, leading to confusion and weak governance foundations for the future.
- Expected: Meetings are well-chaired, inclusive, and result in clear, accountable decisions that provide continuity.
- Excellent: Meetings foster collaboration and insight, leaving a record of decisions that strengthen institutional memory and empower future leaders.
Upholding integrity and fairness
To model impartiality, transparency, and integrity in decision-making. If integrity is compromised, trust is lost and governance legitimacy collapses; fair leadership builds a culture of accountability and resilience for future committees.
- Poor: Decisions appear biased or lack transparency, weakening DCCG’s long-term credibility.
- Expected: The Chair demonstrates fairness and integrity, ensuring ongoing trust in governance.
- Excellent: Integrity becomes embedded in DCCG’s culture, leaving a legacy of transparent and trusted governance.
Representing DCCG externally
To represent DCCG to funders, community groups, iwi, and stakeholders with professionalism and credibility. Poor representation undermines relationships and opportunities; strong representation builds partnerships that secure future support and recognition.
- Poor: DCCG is poorly represented, limiting trust and opportunities for future collaboration.
- Expected: DCCG is represented credibly, maintaining confidence and continuity of partnerships.
- Excellent: DCCG is represented as visionary and trustworthy, creating enduring alliances that secure resources and legitimacy for future generations.
Values
The Chairperson role embodies vision, fairness, and integrity. By leading with impartiality and foresight, the Chair ensures decisions serve both present needs and long-term sustainability. This role is about stewardship, not ownership, aligning with DCCG’s principles of integrity, inclusion, and accountability. When these values are lived, DCCG is positioned to thrive across generations, leaving a legacy of trust and empowered community leadership.
